When synchronizers first appeared as a component, they significantly improved the operation of the gearbox. It is their merit to take the right gear in all driving conditions. When the use of synchronizers was not common, only extensive experience allowed the driver to skillfully disengage and use the intergas to synchronize the rotation of the intermediate shaft and the main shaft in the gearbox – this was important because without proper dexterity, the teeth of the wheels could fall off or break off.
What is the synchronizer responsible for?
The synchronizer is mainly responsible for equalizing rotational speeds before the gears mesh during gear changes. It can be said that it is a kind of brake, thanks to which two modes moving at different speeds match their rotational speed. When the synchronizer is in good shape, it should work quietly and smoothly.
The crunches you may hear when changing gears are not a good sign – they mean that the gear modes overlap at different speeds, resulting in a distinctive sound. This is usually due to changing gears too quickly. The worn synchronizer does not keep up with the synchronization of rotation of the shaft with the rack and pinion, which causes an unpleasant grind. Premature gear changes can also lead to abrasion or breakout of teeth.
Unnecessary holding your hand on the gear lever is another of the reasons for faster wear of synchronizers. The tension of the lever can cause the movement of the rods, which move the synchronizer ring and consume it unnecessarily. In the event that the repair of the gearbox is inevitable, and the culprit of the failure is worn synchronizers, it is worth paying attention to this habit in the future to prevent similar situations.
Gearbox repair – the price of synchronizers
If the engine is the heart of the car, the gearbox is the brain responsible for setting the vehicle in motion. Efficient work of all its elements is therefore extremely important. For this reason, repairing the gearbox, although unwanted, may be a necessity. Synchronizers are one of the most frequently replaced parts in the gearbox. The cost of this procedure depends on the model of the car, on the condition of the engine, the parts used during the replacement and the quality of the services of the repair shop. It is not always necessary to completely replace the gearbox – repair and regeneration of gearboxes can only concern this one part.
If it is inevitable to buy replacement synchronizers, we must take into account not only the cost of the part itself, which ranges from about 500 to 1000 PLN. For example, two synchronizers for Honda Civic from 2003 (mileage 180,000 km) along with shifts cost about PLN 600. To this price should be added the costs of replacement, i.e. disassembling the gearbox, replacing elements, assembling the box, changing oil and sealants – then we will pay from about 1500-2500 PLN.
How to regenerate synchronizers at a cheap cost?
It must be remembered that synchronizers destroy contaminated or poor-quality oil. In the first place, the regeneration of the gearbox is therefore about choosing the right lubricant. To choose the right type of transmission oil, it is worth following the manufacturer’s instructions. If you do not find such information in the manual, you should go to the service, which will quickly dispel our doubts.
If you have already eliminated the question of what gearbox oil to choose from the list of questions, you can also think about the question of what addition to the gearbox will help it regenerate and mute the work of synchronizers. At the forefront of the best will certainly be Ceramizer for CB gearbox. However, is it worth investing money in the purchase of this remedy?
Gearbox regeneration – price
The advantages of using Ceramizer are many. The use of the preparation reduces noise, removes grinds when changing gears and silences the work of rear bridges, transmissions and reducers. In addition, it is not only an addition to the silence of the gearbox, it also allows you to regenerate worn synchronizers, facilitates gear changes and significantly extends the life of the mechanism. The cost of this solution does not reach even PLN 100, and significantly extends the life of the gearbox.
