Engine overheating – what are the reasons, effects and possible solutions to the problem?

Typical symptoms of engine overheating are the inability to regulate the temperature coming out of the vents, air conditioning failure, the smell of coolant in the air, and even smoke coming from under the hood. If you know how much it costs to overhaul your engine, you certainly want to avoid it – so it’s worth finding out how to solve the problem of an overheated engine.

Reasons for engine overheating

One of the reasons for engine overheating is that the coolant boils or is deficient. The coolant is boiled at a temperature of 100 to 130 degrees Celsius – then you can observe clouds of steam that are trying to free themselves from under the mask. Then the temperature indicator may stop working. When it turns out that the problem is a low level of coolant, it should be added – although this will not stop the leak, it will allow you to get to the nearest workshop. Instead of coolant, you can also pour hot or hot water. After filling in the lack of fluid, it is worth starting the engine and checking how it behaves.

Do not even think about further travel if the reason for the overheated engine is a broken drive belt or a failure of the coolant pump. In both cases, the pressure in the cooling system disappears, which means that the fluid does not circulate in the pipes – it does not dissipate heat from the engine. If you operate an older car, its problem may be a broken viscous clutch of the radiator fan. Depending on the temperature, the clutch is switched on or disconnected. The clutch is replaceable if the motor is hot and the fan can still be turned over. Regardless of the damage, it will be necessary to overhaul the engine. The cost of replacing the relevant parts is counted in thousands of zlotys.

What results in overheating of the engine

The consequences of engine overheating can be not only serious failures, but also high repair costs associated with them. However, the failure may affect not only one element, but several – then the replacement costs also increase.

If the engine overheats, one of the milder failures will be damage to the gasket under the head. Replacing this part costs from about 400 from 1500 PLN. More serious damage includes piston ring cracks, cracks or twists of the head, and even piston swelling from temperature and engine seizure. Coping with such serious damage, as a rule, is associated with large financial outlays.

Additives for engine oil – is it worth it?

Even as an experienced driver, you may have trouble dealing with an overheated engine on your own. For this reason, it is worth going to a mechanic who will accurately determine the degree of damage caused. If you want to prevent the engine from overheating, regularly check the level of coolant and check the level of its consumption. Fill any shortages as quickly as possible, because a decrease in the level of liquid may mean a decrease in the efficiency of the car.
